Two ways to PCS — pick the path that fits
In an HHG move, the government arranges and pays a mover. In a personally procured move (PPM, formerly DITY) you run the move yourself and apply for reimbursement. Choose a path for tailored tips, then build the full plan on the PCS planner.
HHG — the government arranges your move
Your transportation or personal property office books and pays a moving company to pack, load, transport, and deliver your household goods, usually through the DPS or MilMove system.
- Book counseling early. Request dates the moment your orders allow — summer PCS windows fill fast, and early booking gives you room to choose pack and pickup dates.
- Know your weight allowance. Allowances vary by rank and dependents. Weight over your allowance can be billed to you, so trim before pack day.
- Inventory high-value items. Photograph electronics, tools, and valuables, and keep a signed copy of the mover’s inventory before it leaves.
- Pack a hand-carry bag. Keep records, medications, chargers, and valuables the movers will not take — carry them with you.
- Track delivery and claims. Watch your Required Delivery Date, inspect at delivery, and file any loss or damage claim through the mover and the property system.
